Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of love and trust between brother and sister. On this day, sisters tie Rakhi on their brothers' wrists, and brothers promise to protect them. On which day will the festival of Rakshabandhan be celebrated in the year 2026? Let us know here.
The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of Sawan. According to the Panchang, the Sawan Purnima Tithi will begin at 05:38 am on August 27 and will end at 06:18 am on August 28. As per the Udaya Tithi, Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) will be celebrated on 28th August 2026.
The festival of Raksha Bandhan is not just about brothers and sisters, but Raksha Bandhan means the bond of protection. It gives the message of protecting family, society, and country. The story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi, King Bali, and Goddess Lakshmi is also associated with this day.
There are several popular stories related to Raksha Bandhan, and one of the most sacred stories is the story of Lord Shri Krishna and Draupadi. Once, Lord Shri Krishna killed Shishupala with the Sudarshan Chakra. During that time, Lord Krishna's finger was cut by the blade of the Chakra, and it started bleeding. Draupadi was nearby; then she immediately tore the pallu of her saree and tied it as a bandage on Kanha's finger.
Pleased with Draupadi's love, Lord Krishna said, "Sakhi, Aaj tumne meri raksha ki hai. Main vachan deta hoon, jab bhi tumhe meri zarurat hogi, main tumhari raksha karunga." Then, years later, when Dushasan tried to disrespect Draupadi in front of a public gathering, Krishna saved her honour. Since then, this bond of “protection in exchange for a thread” is celebrated as Rakshabandhan.
