On the very first day of Shardiya Navratri, the Ghatasthapana and the worship of Goddess Shailputri have special religious significance. Some mistakes could be made in the puja material or installation method, which may create hurdles in receiving fruitful results. In this article, we will tell you the important things to keep in mind while installing the kalash and which mistakes should be avoided.

Significance of Kalash Sthapana

Shardiya Navratri begins from the Pratipada tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month. Ghatasthapana is performed on the first day of Navratri with proper rituals. Scriptures state that the Kalash is considered a symbol of the Tridev and all pilgrimages. It is believed that the Kalash installed with proper rules and purity removes all types of negative energy and Vaastu defects from the house.

Avoid making these mistakes while installing the Kalash

• Choice of wrong direction: Keep in mind that the kalash should always be installed in the north-east corner. Never keep it in the south or west direction.
• Utensils: Never use iron, plastic, or steel utensils in setting up the Kalash. Always use a copper, brass, or clay kalash as it is considered auspicious.
• Use of broken rice or dry coconut: The rice offered in the Kalash should not be broken. 
• Auspicious Timings: Kalash installation should always be done at an auspicious time only. Avoid doing Ghatasthapana during Rahukaal or Chitra Nakshatra.
• Impure soil or place: Use only clean and pure soil for sowing barley. Do not use soil brought from a dirty or impure place.

Shardiya Navratri Kalash Sthapana 

• Clay, copper, or brass pot, pure water, and Gangajal.
• A silver or copper coin, betel nut (supari), Akshat, Durva, cloves, cardamom, and a lump of turmeric.
• 5 or 7 mango or ashoka leaves, coconut, red chunri or kalava.
• Earthen vessel, pure and clean soil, clean water, and barley for sowing.
• Roli, sandalwood, kumkum, akshat, incense, diya, desi ghee, camphor (kapur), red clothes, flowers, and fruits.

Kalash installation method

• Take a bath in the morning, wear clean clothes, and purify the place of worship with Gangajal.
• Spread clean soil in an earthen pot and sow barley in it.
• After this, fill the Kalash with water and Gangajal. Add a coin, durva, betel nut, akshat, and a lump of turmeric in it.
• Apply mango or Ashoka leaves on the mouth of the Kalash.
• Wrap a red chunri or mauli on the coconut and place it on top of the Kalash.
• Make a Swastika symbol on the Kalash and invoke Goddess Durga by placing it in the middle of the vessel containing sown barley.
• Chant Durga Saptashati, Durga Chalisa, and Vedic mantras of the Goddess.
• End the puja with aarti.
• At the end, apologize for the mistake made during the puja.
