Read to know about Lord Vishwakarma and the places established by him

We observe Vishwakarma Puja on the 17th of September every year but little do we know about the importance of this day. Let us first understand who was Lord Vishwakarma and how this day is a special one.
Lord Vishwakarma is considered the chief architect of the cosmos; he is the supreme creator of this world. He is also known by different names such as Swayambhu Brahman or the self-existing, Narayana in Vedic texts, Vishwakarma Prajapati. He is also known to be the father of gods and Asuras. He is the highest Brahman or Para Brahman and is known to be ‘the lord of all existence’ according to Satapatha Brahman.
According to the holy books, he was the one who built cities and palaces for Gods. By doing so he was denoted with a special name which is Devashilpi or Lord’s Architect.  Not only these cities and palaces but he is also known for the creation of heaven. Let us have a look at some of the places constructed by Lord Vishwakarma.

The Golden Lanka

After Lord Shiva married Parvati, he asked Lord Vishwakarma to build a beautiful palace for themselves. At the request of the Lord, he made a Grand Palace. For the inauguration of the palace, he invited sage Pulastya to perform a house warming ritual. At the end of this ceremony, Lord Shiva asked what he wanted in form of an honorarium? He asked for the Golden palace itself, and Lord Shiva agreed without hesitation.
The sage gifted this palace to his grandson Kuber but unfortunately, Ravan was his half-brother, he took it away for himself. This Palace is the Golden Lanka itself.

Hastinapur

Hastinapur is known for being the capital of the Kuru Kingdom of the Kauravas. It was also a grand place that was built by the vision of none other than Lord Vishwakarma.

Indraprastha

At the behest of Shri Krishna, Lord Vishwakarma built Indraprastha on the western side of the Yamuna River. Before that, the place was completely barren before that construction and was known as Khandavprastha. This empty land was developed by the Pandavas which was later given to Dhritrashtra as a gift.

Alkapuri

When Lord Kuber became the God of Wealth, he went to Lord Vishwakarma i.e., his grandfather and asked for a place to live. With this request, he built the magnificent city on the Mandara temple and named it Alkapuri.
Apart from this Lord Vishwakarma built chariots for God’s, which include Pushpak Vimaan, weapons for Gods such as Vijay Dhanush, which was made on special request of Lord Shiva for the supreme God Indra. After which it was gifted by Lord Indra to Parshuram.
It is believed that on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja, Lord Vishwakarma blesses those who respect and worship their tools and remains true to their work. Smiths, builders, craftsmen, welders, industrialists etc. give rest to their tools for this day and pray to the almighty for their better future and success
