The story of Govardhan Parvat is deeply connected with Lord Krishna. According to mythological stories, once a heavy rainfall caused a flood in Vrindavan. To protect the villagers from this disaster, Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Parvat on his little finger. In this article, we will tell you the reason behind this act and why he held the mountain for seven days.
The scriptures state that Lord Indra became arrogant about his powers. He wanted the people of Braj (Vrindavan) to worship only him. One day, Lord Krishna noticed that everyone in the village was preparing for a grand Indra Puja. Out of curiosity, he asked his mother, Yashoda, about it. She said that Indradev is worshipped because he brought rain, which made their crops grow.
But he told her that the rain was Indra’s duty and Govardhan Parvat should be worshipped because it provides them with food, shelter, and grazing grounds for their cows. After convincing the villagers, Lord Krishna urged them to worship Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra.
When Indra saw that the people of Braj were worshipping Govardhan Parvat. He became furious, and in anger, he started pouring heavy rains and storms to punish them. Villagers got terrified and went to Lord Krishna for help. To protect them, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Parvat effortlessly on his little finger and gave everyone shelter under it.
For seven days and nights, Lord Krishna lifted the mountain to protect the people and their cattle from the heavy rainfall. After realising his mistake, Lord Indra stopped the rain and asked for forgiveness. Krishna forgave him with compassion.
Since that day, the festival of Govardhan Puja has been celebrated after Diwali. Devotees honour Lord Krishna, remembering how he protected his devotees.
