Pavitra Ekadashi of Sawan month is also called Putrada Ekadashi. This fast is considered to have special significance for the wish of getting a child. After taking bath on this day, one should wear clean clothes. After this, light a lamp of ghee in front of the idol of Lord Vishnu. Worship the Lord with Tulsi, fruits, and sesame seeds. Fruits can be consumed after worship in the evening. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama after listening to the story of Putrada Ekadashi gives special grace to Lord Vishnu.Night awakening on Ekadashi is also very important.

Fast story of Putrada Ekadashi

According to Shri Padmapuran, King Mahijit of Mahishmatipuri was very dear to peace and religion in Dwapar Yuga but he had no son. The well-wishers of the king told this to Mahamuni Lomesh. Mahamuni told that the king had committed some atrocities in his previous life. Once on Ekadashi day in the afternoon, he reached a reservoir. Seeing a thirsty cow drinking water there, he stopped it and started drinking water himself. It was against the religion of the king to do so. Due to some virtuous deeds of the previous birth, he became the king in the next life, but due to that one sin, he is still childless. Mahamuni told that if all the well-wishers of the king observe fast on the Ekadashi date of Shravan Shukla Paksha and give his virtue to the king, then they will surely have a child.

At the behest of Mahamuni, along with the subjects, the king also kept this fast. After a few months, the queen gave birth to a son. It is believed that since then this Ekadashi came to be called Shravan Putrada Ekadashi.
