Kodungallur Temple

Sri Kurumba Bhagwati Temple is also known as Kodungallur Devi Temple. Located in Kodungallur in Thrissur district of Kerala state, India, this temple is counted among the most amazing temples in South India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali where Mother Kali is worshiped. Here the goddess is addressed by the local people by the name of Kurumba or Kodungallur Amma. This temple in Kerala is the flagship of 64 Srikurumba poets in Malabar.

The idol installed in the temple represents the fierce form of Maa Kali. The eight hands of the Goddess are also known for their special characteristics. The head of a demon king Daruka, the sword in one hand, the ring in the next, another bell.Thus something is present in all the hands of the goddess. Regular worship is done in the temple.

A Brief History:-

Kodungallur Devi is considered to be the original form of mother Kali. Kodungallur was once the capital of the Chera kingdom. Which emerged as an important city during that time. The temple is believed to be located in the very middle of Kerala, addressed by Tamil speakers as Malayala Bhagwati.
This temple was built many years ago, whose rituals of worship include ancient Shaktim traditions which are not found in other Kerala temple. Tracing the pages of history shows that this temple was built by Cheraman Perumal. The first Shakti Puja at Kodungallur Temple was performed by Thiyar of Malabar. Even today the Thiyya Thandan of 64 Thars shows the ancient evidence present in Kodungallur.

Religious Beleifs:-

Evidence from ancient times suggests that the temple had a tradition of sacrificing animals before. The sacrifices were often offered by birds and goats. These sacrifices were practiced by the devotees to seek protection and fulfill their prayers. However, after the intervention of the Cochin government, animals are no longer sold here.
Cattle have been banned here. But it is not that religious rituals have come to an end here. There is a tradition of offering red dhoti to the Lord of the temple here. Apart from this, many devotees also offer expensive gifts and gold and silver to the Goddess. The locals of Kodungallur believe that in ancient times this place used to be the temple of Lord Shiva and Parashurama installed the idol of Goddess Bhadrakali near the Shiva temple.Apart from this, people believe that the worship performed here is done according to the direct instruction of the Mother Goddess. Apart from this, five 'Sri Chakras' have been established here by Adi Shankara,which is considered to be the main source of the powers of this Goddess. The priests here are Namboodiris and Adikas who have the right to pay 'wreaths' to the goddess;
