Skanda Shashthi of Kartik month is the time of wishing long life of children and victory over enemies. Lord Kartikeya is the lord of power and the commander of the gods, his worship ends diseases and increases power. According to the calculation of Hindu calendar, Lord Kartikeya will be worshiped on the sixth day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Kartikeya is also known as Skanda, hence this day is celebrated as Skanda Shashthi. Lord Skanda is worshiped in the form of Kumar.

Skanda Shashthi is observed on Saturday, 15 October. This fast is also known as Santana Shashthi. On this day mothers keep a fast for the good health and long life of their children and worship Lord Kartikeya. Lord Kartikeya is the commander of the gods. Therefore, they are also worshiped for victory over enemies and fasting is kept for the whole day.

Skanda Kumar is also a name of Lord Kartikeya. That is why this fast is considered very special. Lord Skanda is the commander of the gods Lord Skanda is the presiding deity of Shakti. He is also called the commander of the gods. He is most worshiped in South India. Here it is also famous as Murugan. Lord Skanda is one of the main deities of Hinduism. Skanda is also called by the names Kartikeya and Murugan.

One of the major deities worshiped in South India, Lord Kartikeya is the son of Shiva Parvati. Most of the devotees of Lord Kartikeya are Tamil Hindus. He is worshiped especially in Tamil Nadu and southern states of India.
