According to the legend, Tulsi, the daughter of King Dharmatmaj, went on a pilgrimage with the desire of marriage. During the pilgrimage, Tulsi saw that Ganesh Ji was doing penance on the banks of the Ganges. According to the legend, Lord Ganesha was absorbed in penance. His body was covered with sandalwood. There was a garland of gems around his neck. Pitamber of silk was wrapped around the waist. He was doing penance sitting on a throne. Tulsi was fascinated by seeing the beautiful form of Lord Ganesha. Expressing his desire to marry her, he broke his penance. Lord Ganesha became enraged by this and called this act of Tulsi inauspicious. Knowing the intention of Tulsi, he said that I am a Brahmachari. His marriage proposal was turned down.

On hearing this, Tulsi got angry and cursed Lord Ganesha that you will not have one but two marriages. On this Lord Ganesha also cursed him that you will be married to a demon. Hearing this, Tulsi apologized to Ganesha. After this Ganesh Ji said, because of being dear to Lord Vishnu and Krishna, your worship in Kaliyuga will be rewarding. But offering you in my worship will be considered inauspicious. Since then, offering Tulsi in the worship of Lord Ganesha is considered taboo.
