Why is Lord Shiva called Neelkanth?

During the churning of the ocean, when the gods and the demonic side were churning for the attainment of nectar, then a terrible poison called Kalakoot came out of the ocean. The fire of that poison started burning in the ten directions and the sages, sages, humans, Gandharvas and Yakshas, including the gods and demons, started burning with the heat of that poison.

On the request of the gods, Lord Shiva filled the terrible poison in his conch and drank it after remembering Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu takes away the troubles of his devotees. He stopped that poison in Shiva's throat (throat) and ended its effect. Due to the poison, the throat of Lord Shiva turned blue and he became famous in the world by the name of Neelankath.

While Lord Shiva was drinking the poison, a few drops of the poison fell down. Which were absorbed by creatures like scorpions, snakes etc. and some vegetation. Due to this poison they became poisonous. When the effect of poison ended, all the gods started hailing Lord Shiva.
