Tilak of bhasma
Sadhus and saints associated with the Shaiva tradition will often be seen applying ashes on their bodies. We have a tradition of applying tilak of havan bhasma even after havan in worship. As a measure, it is believed that lord Bhairava is happy to apply sandalwood of bhasma on Saturdays.
Sandalwood Tilak
The tilak of sandalwood applied on the forehead cools our mind. Applying it increases concentration. Sandalwood is found in many types. Applying red sandalwood tilak infuses energy within the person. Similarly, applying yellow sandalwood or turmeric tilak gives the grace of Devguru Brahaspati.
Tilak of Kunkum In worship, only the tilak of kunkum is commonly used. Turmeric powder is made of kumkum by giving a feeling of lemon juice, which is often planted by married women on the forehead for the longevity and good fortune of their suhag.
Tilak of Sindoor
Many deities are given sindoor tilak. Sindoor tilak is a remover of all kinds of obstacles. That is why it is specially used in Hanumat and Ganpati sadhana. For example, applying prasad swarup tilak to the vermilion on Shri Hanuman ji's shoulder on Tuesdays and Saturdays removes all life related problems.
