According to the Hindu calendar, on the Chaturthi date of every month, Vinayaka Chaturthi or Sankashti Chaturthi occurs. Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha is called Vinayaka Chaturthi and Krishna Paksha Chaturthi is Sankashti Chaturthi.

Legend Story of Vinayak Chaturthi Vrat-
Once Mata Parvati expressed her desire to play Chaupar with Shiva. Goddess & shiva started playing Chaupar but the difficulty in this game was who would decide to win and lose. For this, by making a child out of a weed, he made a life of dignity in it and said that you should decide who wins and who loses.
After this, Mata Parvati won three times. But that child said that Mahadev should win. Mother Parvati got very angry on this and cursed the child to stay in the mud.
According to beliefs by observing Ganesh Chaturthi fast, your sufferings will be removed.
After that the child worshiped Ganesh and Lord Ganesh was pleased. Lord Ganesh gave him the boon to go to Kailash to see his parents i.e. Lord Shiva-Parvati.The child reached Kailash. At the same time, to celebrate Mata Parvati, lord Shiva also fasted for 21 days and goddess Parvati agreed.After this, Mother Parvati also fasted for 21 days to meet her son and this wish was fulfilled.
