16 Sanskar in Hinduism: 16 sacred sanskars are followed in Hinduism. All these rites are performed by every person from their birth to death. Sanskars are those deeds which are performed at different stages of a human life. According to Gautam Dharmasutra, 40 rites are mentioned in Sanatan Dharma, out of which 16 major rites are called Shodash Sanskar. Read to know about them in detail. 

16 Sanskar in Hinduism

In Sanatan Dharma, many such deeds have been told by Rishis and Munis, which are deeply related to human life. These include 16 major Sanskar (rites), which are also called Sanskaranya, or cultures. Although 40 rites are mentioned in Sanatan Dharma, out of which 16 major rites are called Shodash Sanskar. Whose purpose is to ensure the progress of the person, spiritual development and training of social ideals.

All 16 Sanskar have been going on since ancient times and are considered to be the main karma of man. All the karmas from birth to death of man have been mentioned in 16 rites. Know about these 16 major rites of Hindu religion here.

16 major Sanskar of Hindu religion

  • Garbhadhan Sanskar: This rite is performed between a man and a woman to have a child. Maharishi Charak has said about this rite that for a happy mind and heart, a man and a woman should eat good food and stay positive. Similarly, Garbhadhan Sanskar should be performed to get a good child.

  • Pumsavan Sanskar: This rite is performed after three months of conception. The main purpose of this rite is to take special care of the safety and health of the child growing in the womb. This is because after three months the brain of the child growing in the mother's womb starts developing.

  • Simantonnayan Sanskar: In this rite, a thread is tied on the head of the pregnant woman to indicate the safety of the child.

  • Jaatkaram Sanskar: In this Sanskar, the newborn is fed ghee or honey and Vedic mantras are recited. By doing this, the child gets rid of many types of defects.

  • Naamkaram Sanskar: It is considered a very important sanskar in Sanatan Dharma. This is because 11 days after birth, the newborn is given a name, which remains with him throughout his life. Just as clothes enhance the beauty of the body, in the same way the name also makes life positive.

  • Nishkraman Sanskar: In this Sanskar, prayers are offered to the gods and goddesses for the welfare and safety of the child. During this, havan etc. are organized and the gods and goddesses are invoked by Vedic mantras.

  • Annaprashan Sanskar: Annaprashan Sanskar is performed after 06-07 months from birth. In this Sanskar, the child is fed food and after this Sanskar, the child is started to be fed food.

  • Chudakarma Sanskar: Chudakarma Sanskar i.e. Mundan has special significance in Sanatan culture. In this sanskar, the hair on the head of the child is cut for the first time. This sanskar is done when the child is one year, three or five years or seventh year old. By doing this, along with the hair of the child, the fear of many types of diseases also goes away.

  • Karnavedh Sanskar: Karnavedh translates to piercing the ear. It is considered necessary for both boys and girls. Karnavedh Sanskar is done to wear ornaments, to reduce the effect of Rahu-Ketu. It is said in Ayurveda that by doing Karnavedh Sanskar, the hearing power increases.

  • Upanayan Sanskar: This sanskar is mainly conducted in Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishya castes. During this, the children are made to wear the sacred thread amidst the Vedic mantras. It is believed that only after the Upanayan Sanskar, the child can go to the Guru and study the Vedas. There are three threads in the sacred thread which are considered to be the symbol of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahadev.

  • Vedarambha Sanskar: Vedarambha Sanskar is very important for a person. The purpose of this sanskar is to provide knowledge of Vedas to the person. So that he can follow all the values of life properly.

  • Vivah Sanskar: This sanskar is performed when a person becomes eligible for marriage. In this sanskar, the bride and groom promise to stay together for life with the Vedic mantras. Also, with the blessings of parents and gods and goddesses, they start a new married life. This sanskar is considered very important for the spiritual and mental development of a person. By following this sanskar, a person becomes free from the debt of ancestors.

  • Vanaprastha Sanskar: Vanaprastha Sanskar is performed before taking sanyaas. This sanskar is mainly performed to make the spiritual life successful.

  • Sanyaas Sanskar: In this sanskar, the person takes sanyaas and is completely separated from the society.

  • Antyeshti Sanskar: Another meaning of Antyeshti Sanskar is also last rites (Antim sanskar). In this ritual, the dead body is freed from the mortal world by surrendering it to fire. By performing the last rites, the soul of the person gets peace and the doors of salvation open for them.

  • Shraddha Sanskar: In the Shraddha Sanskar, Pitra Devta is worshiped and it is prayed that they attain salvation. This ritual is performed to please the ancestors and to provide peace to the souls of the ancestors.
