According to the Vedic Calendar, the Kartik month begins on 8th October. Married women eagerly await this festival. On this day, women observe a "Nirjala fast" or fast which is done without food or water and involves worshipping Goddess Karwa Mata. Observing this fast brings sweetness and strengthens the relationship between husband and wife. Women break their fast by looking at the moon and then their husband's face with a sieve (channi).

On this day, women wake up early in the morning, take a bath, wear clean clothes and have sargi, which is a meal given by the mother-in-law to the daughter-in-law before starting the fast of Karwa Chauth. In the evening, women worship to Goddess Karwa Mata and listen Karwa Chauth vrat katha. Karwa Chauth day is also known as Karak Chaturthi. Karwa or Karak refers to the earthen pot through which water offering, known as Argha, is made to the moon. They break their fast at night by looking at the moon and giving argh to it with an earthen pot, and then eat a bite of food and drink water from their husband's hand.
