Celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm, this festival is celebrated similarly to Shitala Puja in the northern states of India. The people there worship Goddess Poleramma as the local goddess. It is believed that the Goddess protects children from all diseases and accidents. She is considered one of the main incarnations of Goddess Shakti or Durga.

The day of worship of Poleramma falls on Amavasya Tithi every year, hence the fast observed on this day is called Pola Amavasya. Special rituals and pujas are organized in temples on this day.
