Mythological Stories Associated With Shravan Maas

In the Hindu Dharm, the month of Shravan is considered the most sacred month, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The month is filled with devotion, fasting, prayers, and spiritual practices. Mythological stories associated with the month of shravan states tha Goddess Parvati performed penance during the Shravan month to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Lord Shiva was pleased with her devotion and accepted her as his wife, which is why this month is considered extremely auspicious for worship and spiritual discipline. Goddess Parvati's Penance Story

The scriptures state that Goddess Parvati was considered to be the rebirth of Goddess Sati. As Sati, she sacrificed herself in the yajna organised by her father, Daksh, because he insulted Lord Shiva. Goddess Sati's death detached Lord Shiva from the world and detached himself from the world and immersed himself in deep meditation in the Himalayas. 

Goddess Sati was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan and Queen, and she decided to marry Lord Shiva once again. From her childhood, Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva with complete faith and devotion. But pleasing Lord Shiva was not that easy, as he was completely detached from the world and immersed in his intense penance. 

After worshipping for several years, Lord Shiva was not pleased with her, and to prove her devotion, Goddess Parvati performed penance for many years. She gave up all the comforts, lived in forests, survived on fruits and leaves, and later stopped eating completely. Upon seeing her unwavering faith and determination, all the gods and Lord Shiva were pleased. 

It is believed that Goddess Parvati intensified her worship and offered water, bilva leaves, and prayers to the Shivling. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted Parvati as her companion. This conveys the message of the importance of patience, dedication, faith, and pure love. Since then, unmarried women observe Shravan fasts and pray to Lord Shiva for a compatible life partner.

Shiva-Parvati Marriage Connection

This month is deeply connected to the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. After the completion of Goddess Parvati's penance, Lord Shiva decided to test her devotion. Some stories also describe that Lord Shiva appeared in disguise in front of Goddess Parvati and spoke negatively about himself to test her faith. But Goddess Parvati firmly defended Shiva with complete devotion, and pleased by her love, Shiva appeared in his true form and agreed to marry her. 

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's marriage is considered one of the greatest events in Hindu Mythology. Gods, sages, and all the devotees gathered to witness the divine union. The rituals were not like an ordinary marriage, as Lord Shiva arrived with his ganas, ghosts, sages, serpents, and mystical beings. This was known to be a sacred union, as Goddess Parvati brought balance and warmth to the detached life of Lord Shiva, while Lord Shiva guided her towards spiritual wisdom.

Shiv and Parvati are worshipped together during Shravan Maas, for marital happiness, peace, prosperity, and family well-being. Married women pray for the long life of their husbands, and unmarried girls observe fast to seek an ideal or compatible partner in life. 

The Mondays of the Shravan month are especially dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees offer milk, gangajal, honey, curd, and bilwa leaves to the Shivling while chanting " Om Namah Shivaya."
